Uplift Pathways

Uplift Pathways is a journey map for whānau navigating interaction with Oranga Tamariki.

The map shows what happens when a child is uplifted. Many whānau interacting with Oranga Tamariki don’t understand the process, which can be unexpected and scary. Clear communication of the process was previously non-existent, or very difficult to find.

This resource clarifies this process and shows whānau what they can do to navigate these situations. ‘Uplift Pathways’ communicates clearly to whānau who are experiencing great stress. Defined use of Oranga Tamariki terms such as ‘Family Group Conference’ help whānau to navigate the maze that Oranga Tamariki proceedings often can be.

Emma (a public health student) supported the development of the journey map by researching the uplift process. Emma described this process like ‘putting together a puzzle’, having to search across more than 10 websites to understand the uplift process. This evidences the lack of clarity around these processes for whānau attempting to navigate the system. Sources which informed the final map included the Oranga Tamariki website, Citizens Advice Bureau, Youthlaw Aotearoa and legislation. Many of these sources were filled with high level, hard to read language, which can be another barrier to understanding for whānau.

Jordan (a communication designer) developed the design and illustration of the journey map. It was important for Jordan to consider an audience of mixed ages, creating an illustration style that was accessible and approachable. The design process involved repeated simplification. The content had to be clear to follow, while still including all the necessary information.

As well as the journey map, a ‘Know Your Rights’ poster was developed. The purpose of this poster is to help whānau to understand what their legal rights are, empowering and protecting whānau. This poster also helps whānau to understand  ....(NOT YET FINISHED)....
